Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born within Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was attracted by art. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for literature and theatre in the daytime. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as an instrument for activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a strong social conscience and advised DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced famous civil rights protest on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was drawn to journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to observe the house that one of the members of the jury. She was also asked to go through their garbage. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism due to the work she was assigned, she determined to make a move in the field of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant at a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. She also started several marketing and lifestyle websites, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
